History of Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born 1880 in Germany and grew up a sickly child suffering from rickets, rheumatic fever and asthma. His determination to strengthen his health and fitness led him to a life which he dedicated to educating the body and mind to become stronger.

Joseph developed his own exercises drawn from many different influences such as Yoga, self defense, boxing, skiing and gymnastics. Throughout his life Joseph helped many people with his exercises, teaching self-defense to detectives in London, doing rehabilitation work with his interns on a camp during the First World War and setting up a fitness studio in New York which attracted amongst many, fitness elites such as dancers and gymnasts.  Many of Joseph Pilates exercises were advanced at this stage and some modern day Pilates have been adapted somewhat to accommodate almost anyone.

Joseph Pilates died at the age of 87 but his methods carried on from teacher to teacher and now with it's proven benefits, Pilates is hugely popular with people all over the world.
